Henry J. Saucke was born in Dec 1859 at Hannover, Germany. He was a son of Henry Saucke, Sr. and Elizabeth Saucke (Detz). Henry J. Saucke immigrated from Germany to the United States of America in 1883 and was naturalized as a citizen of the USA in 1889.
On 12 Jul 1888, Henry J. Saucke married Minna Marie D. Zeitz at Farnhamville in Calhoun County, Iowa. Marie Zeitz was a daughter of Christopher Conrad Zeitz and Maria Elisabeth Zeitz (Muhlen). At their marriage, Henry J. Saucke was age 28, and Marie Zeitz was 23 years of age.
Before 1900, Marie and Henry J. Saucke gave birth to four children: Henry Saucke, Jr. in Jul 1889; Carl Saucke on 22 Oct 1890; Elsie Saucke in Apr 1895; and Lillie Dorthea Sophia Saucke on 7 Aug 1898. All four children were born in Iowa.
By 7 Jun 1900, Henry J. Saucke and his family were living in Reading Township of Calhoun County, Iowa when the U.S. Federal Census enumerated the household of Henry Saucke, age 40 years and born in Germany in Dec 1859 and his wife Mary Saucke, age 35 years and born in Germany in Mar 1865. Four children were living in the household: Henry Saucke, age 10 and born in Jul 1889; Carl, age 9 and born in Oct 1890; Elsie, age 5 and born in Apr 1895; and Lilly Saucke, age 1 year and born in Aug 1898. All children were born in Iowa. Henry J. Saucke was working as a farmer.
A 1911 plat of Reading Township of Calhoun County, Iowa shows Henry Sauke as the owner of 160 acres of land described as the NE part, Section 16, Township 86 North, Range 31 West of the 5th Prime Meridian. This land was about two miles west of Farnhamville in Calhoun County, Iowa. The 1911 plat also shows Henry Saucke as the owner of 240 acres of land described as the NW part and the N one-half part of the NE part of Section 22, Township 86 North, Range 31 West of the 5th Prime Meridian. One or both of these land holdings may have belonged to Henry J. Saucke’s son, Henry Saucke, Jr., who was about 21 years of age in 1911.
The Henry Saucke household changed little by the 2 Apr 1910 Federal Census that enumerated Henry Saucke, age 50 and married 22 years; Mary Saucke, age 45; Henry Saucke, age 20; Carl, age 19; Elsie, age 14; and Lillie Saucke, age 11 years. At the 19 Feb 1920 Federal Census of Reading Township of Calhoun County, Iowa, only Lillie Saucke, age 21 years and working in store sales, was still living in the Henry J. Saucke household.
The 1925 Iowa State Census of Calhoun County, Iowa enumerates Henry Saucke, age 65 years and born in Germany, and his wife Mary Saucke, age 60 and born in Germany. In 1925 Henry Saucke had lived in Iowa 42 years, and Mary Saucke, 36 years. Henry and Mary Saucke held real estate with value of $8,000.
Henry J. Saucke died at Farnhamville in Calhoun County, Iowa on 22 Apr 1929. He was 69 years of age. Henry J. Saucke is buried in Reading Cemetery in Calhoun County, Iowa.
