His parents were both born in Ohio. Michael’s wife, Agnes (Livingston) Griffith was 21 years old, and both of her parents were born in Pennsylvania. One year-old Maudy Griffith was born in Kansas.
The 1 Mar 1885 Kansas State Census enumerates the Michael Griffith household of the Empire Township of Ellsworth County, Kansas (1041). Michael Griffith was 31 years old, and Agnes (Livingston) Griffith was 23. Three children lived in the household: Maudie, five years old; Sarah, four years old; and one-year old Clara Griffith. Michael and Agnes Griffith were both born in Ohio. At the 1 Mar 1895 Kansas State Census of the Empire Township of Ellsworth County, Kansas, M. J. Griffith was 42 years old, and A. L. Griffith was 35 (1042). Six children lived in the household: Maud, 16 years old; 13 year-old Sarah; 11 year-old Clara; 9 year-old Lizzie; 7 year-old Emma; and one year-old Truman Griffith. All children were born in Kansas.
On 16 Feb 1896, Fred G. Countryman and Maude Ellen Griffith married at Midway Station in Ellsworth County, Kansas (782). Midway Station was a rural railway station about half-way between Geneseo and Kanoplis, Kansas (790).
A son, George Washington Countryman, was born to Fred G. and Maude Ellen Countryman on 4 Jan 1897 at Mitchell in Rice County, Kansas (659, 787). A daughter, Amelia Alice Countryman, was born at Galt in Rice County, Kansas on 18 Dec 1898 (975).
The 1900 U.S. Federal Census of the Mitchell Township of Rice County, Kansas enumerates the household of F. G. Countryman, 33 years old and born in Jul 1866 in New York (777). F. G. Countryman worked as a black smith. Fred Countryman’s parents were both born in New York. Maud Countryman was 21 years old, born in Kansas in Feb 1879. Her parents were both born in Ohio. Also living in the F. G. Countryman household were a son, George W. Countryman, three years old and born in Jan 1897, and one year-old Amilia Countryman, born in Dec 1898. Both children were born in Kansas.
A son Louis Countryman was born to Fred and Maude Countryman on 1 Aug 1900 in Rice County, Kansas (682).
Before 19 Jul 1903, the Fred G. Countryman family settled on land in Woods County, Oklahoma north of the Salt Fork River within Section 27 of Township 27 North of Range 9 West of the Indian Meridian. This land was about two miles northeast of the Great Salt Lake in Woods County. A son Paul Countryman was born to Fred and Maude Countryman on 19 Jul 1903 at Galt in Woods County, Oklahoma (683, 977). Six children were living in the Fred Countryman household: George Countryman, 13 years old and born in Kansas; Cornelia Countryman, 11 years old and born in Kansas; Lewis Countryman, 10 years old and born in Kansas; Paul Countryman, 10 years old and born in Oklahoma; Frank, 4 years old and born in Oklahoma; and Dorce Countryman, one year-old and born in Oklahoma.
In Apr 1913, the Fred G. Countryman household migrated from Alfalfa County, Oklahoma to Fairview in Major County, Oklahoma (760). Fred and Maude Countryman remained residents of Fairview for the remainder of their lives. Two daughters were born to Fred and Maude Countryman at Fairview in Major County: Fannie Lee Countryman on 22 Jan 1914 (1101); and Georgia Willamay Countryman on 4 Jan 1919.
At the 14 Jan 1920 federal census of Fairview in Major County, Oklahoma, Fred Countryman was 59 years old and working as a blacksmith in a shop that he owned (748). His wife Maude Countryman was 40 years old. Fred Countryman reported that he was born in New York as were both his father and mother. The census enumerates George W. Countryman as born in Kansas; all other children were born in Oklahoma.
A son, Henry Alfred Countryman, born to Maude and Fred Countryman on 17 Nov 1920 at Fairview in Major County, Oklahoma, died soon after birth (696).
The 1930 federal census of Fairview in Major County Oklahoma enumerates the Fred G. Countryman household on 22 Apr 1930 as (780):
Fred G. Countryman, 63 years old, and born in New York;
Maude Countryman, 51 years old and born in Kansas;
George W. Countryman, 33 years old and born in Kansas;
Fannie L. Countryman, 16 years old and born in Oklahoma; and
Georgia W. Countryman, 11 years old and born in Oklahoma.
Both of Fred Countryman’s parents were recorded as born in New York. Both of Maude Countryman’s parents were born in Ohio. At their marriage, Fred Countryman was 30 years old, and Maude Countryman was 17 years old. Fred G. Countryman held real estate valued at $1,500.
Agness Montgomery, a daughter of Fred and Maude Countryman, and her husband Cyril E. Montgomery were living with the Fred G. Countryman household. Agness Montgomery was 19 years old and born in Oklahoma. Cyril E. Montgomery was 24 years old and born in Oklahoma. At their marriage, Agness Montgomery was 19 years old and Cyril E. Montgomery was 24 years old.
The 7 May 1940 federal census of Fairview in Major County, Oklahoma enumerates the Fred G. Countryman household (779). Fred Countryman was 73 years old and born in New York. His wife Maude E. Countryman was 63 years old and born in Kansas. Fred Countryman responded to supplemental questions to state that his father was born in Holland and that his mother was born in New York. Fred Countryman completed school through the 8th grade. He was working as a Blacksmith. Fred owned the property he lived in, and Fred and Maude Countryman were living in the same house in 1935. The census enumerates the household of Fred Countryman’s oldest son, George W. Countryman at the adjacent property.
Fredrick Glonar Countryman died on 11 Nov 1948 of injuries he incurred during an assault and robbery at his blacksmith shop behind his home in Fairview, Oklahoma (782, 786). At Fred’s death, Maude Ellen (Griffith) Countryman was 69 years old. She continued to live in their Fairview, Oklahoma home.
Maude Ellen (Griffith) Countryman died on 27 Jan 1960 at the home of her daughter, Fannie Lee (Countryman) Emanuel, in Oklahoma City in Oklahoma County, Oklahoma. At her death, Maude Ellen Countrymen was 80 years old. Her remains are buried in the Fairview Cemetery at Fairview in Major County, Oklahoma.
Maude Ellen Countryman died intestate. Probate of her estate occurred on 12 Aug 1960 at Fairview in Major County, Oklahoma (658).

The 1880 federal census of Ellsworth County, Kansas enumerates Maude Ellen Griffith as Maudy Griffith (1036). The 1885 Kansas State Census enumerates Maude as Maudie (1041), and the 1895 Kansas census as well as the 1900 and 1910 federal censuses enumerate her as Maud Griffith (1042, 777, 778).
Geographic Boundary History
Woods County, Oklahoma was created within the Oklahoma Territory from part of the Cherokee Outlet on 16 Sep 1893. Alfalfa and Major Counties were created from parts of Woods County on 16 Nov 1907.
Township 27 North of Range 9 West of the Indian Meridian was within that part of Woods County that became Alfalfa County.
County L was created in the Oklahoma Territory from part of the Cherokee Outlet on 16 Sep 1893. County L became Grant County, Oklahoma on 6 Nov 1894.
