The Patterson and Cadwalader families were members of the Society of Friends, the Quakers. At their daughter Sarah’s birth, William L. Patterson was 25 years old, and his wife Sarah Ann Patterson was 24.
The 15 Aug 1850 federal census of the Marion Township of Morgan County, Ohio enumerates the household of William Patterson, 31 years old and working as a farmer (965). His wife Sarah was 28 years old. Also living in the Patterson household were children Josiah, nine years old; Sarah age 7, Rachel, two-years old; and one-year old Margaret Cadwalader. All children were born in Ohio.
In 1856, the William L. Patterson family migrated from Morgan County, Ohio to the Douglas Township of Boone County, Iowa (217, Page 45).
The 12 Jul 1860 federal census enumerates the William Patterson household in the Douglas Township of Boone County, Iowa (966). William Patterson was 40 years old, born in Ohio, and working as a farmer. His wife Sarah A. Patterson was 38 years old and born in Ohio. Six children were living in the household: Josiah Patterson, 17 years old; Sarah E. Patterson, 15 years old; Rachell Patterson, 12 years old; Edith Patterson, 6 years old; Charles Cadwalader, 15 years old and working as a farmer; and Margaret Cadwalader, 10 years old. All children were born in Ohio. William Patterson held $1,800 in real estate and a personal estate of $750.
On 5 Sep 1861, George Washington Vontrees and Sarah Elizabeth Patterson married in Boone County, Iowa (46, Volume 2, Page 316; 992). At their marriage, Sarah was 16 years old, and George Vontrees was 28. George Vontrees was a son of Jacob Vontrees and Mahulda Lottie (Denny) Vontrees. George was born in Clay County, Indiana and migrated to the Worth Township of Boone County, Iowa in 1854 (46, volume 2, Page 315).
A daughter, Elvira B. Vontrees, was born to George and Sarah Vontrees on 14 Sep 1865 in Boone County, Iowa. At her birth, Sarah (Patterson) Vontrees was 20 years old and George Vontrees was age 32 years.
The 14 Jul 1870 federal census of Boone County, Iowa enumerates the George Vontrees household (700). George Vontrees was 36 years old, born in Indiana, and working as a farmer. Sarah E. Vontrees was 25 years old and born in Ohio. Their daughter Elvira Vontrees was 4 years old and born in Iowa. George Vontrees held real estate valued at $3,850 and a personal estate of $500.
A son William P. Vontrees was born on 22 Jan 1871 in Boone County, Iowa. At William’s birth, Sarah was 25 years old and George Vontrees was 37 years old. A son George Ross Vontrees was born in Boone County, Iowa on 26 Aug 1876.
The 1880 federal census records the George W. Vontrees in the Worth Township of Boone County, Iowa (993). George W. Vontrees was 46 years old, born in Indiana, and working as a farmer. His wife Sarah E. Vontrees was 35 years old and born in Ohio. Three children were living in the household: Elvira B. Vontrees, age 14; William Vontrees, a: 9; and George R. Vontrees, age 3 years.
Before 23 Jun 1900, the George W. Vontrees family migrated from Boone County to the Cedar Township of Calhoun County, Iowa where the 1900 federal census recorded the household of George W. Vontrees, 66 years old, born in Jul 1833 in Indiana, and working as a farmer (994). Sarah E. Vontrees was 55 years old, born in Ohio in Apr 1845, and William Vontrees was 29 years old, born in Iowa in Jan 1871, and working as a farmer. Sarah’s parents were both born in Ohio. The father of George W. Vontrees was born in Pennsylvania, and his mother was born in Kentucky. Both parents of Sarah E. Vontrees were bon in Ohio.
The 22 Apr 1910 federal census of the Cedar Township of Calhoun County, Iowa enumerates the household of George W. Vontrees, age 76 years, born in Indiana, and working as a farmer (997). His father ws born in Pennsylvania and his mother was born in West Virginia. His wife Sarah E. Vontrees was 66 years old and born in Ohio. Sarah’s father was born in Ohio, and her mother was born in West Virginia. Their son William P. Vontrees was 38 years old and born in Iowa.
Also living in the George W. Vontrees household at the 1910 federal census was Ross Vontrees, 33 years old, and his wife Dayse Vontrees, 38 years old, as well as their two children: Sarah Y. Vontrees, 5 years old, and Dayse C. Vontrees, 3 years old. All members of the William P. and Dayse Vontrees family were born in Iowa.
Sarah Elizabeth (Patterson) Vontrees died on 20 Dec 1910 in the Cedar Township of Calhoun County, Iowa (1110). At her death, Sarah was 65 years old. She is buried in the Cedar Cemetery near Rinard in Calhoun County, Iowa.
