Jeremiah Patterson was born on 8 Aug 1790 in Northampton County, North Carolina (964, Page 224; 1007). He was a son of William Patterson, Jr. and Elizabeth (Ladd) Patterson. At Jeremiah’s birth, William Patterson, Jr. was 27 years old, and Elizabeth was 30 years old.
Many Quaker Patterson families living in Northampton County, North Carolina migrated to Belmont County, Ohio as a group. On 7 Apr 1807, William Patterson, Jr. and sons requested that the Jack Swamp Monthly Meeting in Northampton County provide a certificate to the Short Creek Monthly Meeting in Jefferson County, Ohio (964, Page 253). On 16 Jul 1807, the William and Elizabeth Patterson and their family were received by the Short Creek Monthly Meeting in Jefferson County, Ohio on the certificate from the Jack Swamp Monthly Meeting in North Carolina dated 7 May 1807 (216, Page 261).
On 31 Jul 1808, William Patterson and his wife Elizabeth (Ladd) with children Silas, Talitha, Jeremiah, Axum, and Rachel were received by the Stillwater Monthly Meeting of Friends in Belmont County, Ohio on a certificate from the Short Creek Monthly Meeting dated 22 May 1808 and by the Concord Monthly Meeting on 26 Jul 1808 (216, Page 427). William Patterson appears on a 1810 Tax List for the Warren Township of Belmont County, Ohio (1004).
On 16 Feb 1813, Jeremiah Patterson and Elizabeth Plummer married at the Stillwater Quaker Meeting House at Barnesville in Belmont County, Ohio (216, Page 426). Elizabeth Plummer was a daughter of Robert and Rachel Plummer of Belmont County, Ohio. A daughter, Eliza Jane, was born to Jeremiah and Elizabeth Patterson on 29 Dec 1813 (216, Page 426).
On 21 Mar 1815, Jeremiah Patterson and Rachel Plummer served as administrators for settlement of the estate of Robert Plummer in Belmont County, Ohio. Thomas Smith, Joseph Stubbs, and Otho French served as appraisers (1014).
A daughter, Rachel P. Patterson was born to Jeremiah and Elizabeth Patterson on 25 Oct 1815 (216, Page 426).
On 26 Dec 1815, the Marietta land office issued two patents to Jeremiah Patterson of Jefferson County, Ohio for land described as the Southwest 1/4 of Section 13 of Township 7 North in Range 6 West of the Ohio River Survey Meridian (986) and the Northwest 1/4 of Section 7 of Township 7 North in Range 6 West of the Ohio River Survey Meridian (987). On 30 Oct 1816, the Marietta land office issued a third patent to Jeremiah Patterson of Jefferson County, Ohio for land described as the Northeast 1/4 of Section 13 in Township 7 North of Range 6 West (988). All three patents were for land in Belmont County, Ohio.
Jeremiah Patterson also held 100 acres of land in Section 28 of Township 3 of Range 7 in Jefferson County, Ohio. He appears on tax lists for this land in 1816, 1817, and 1819 (1071).
The 1820 federal census of the Warren Township of Belmont County, Ohio enumerates the Jeremiah Patterson household (982). Jeremiah Patterson was 26–44 years old. A female household member, age 16–25 years, was likely Jeremiah’s wife Elizabeth (Plummer) Patterson. A male less than 10 years old was likely William L. Patterson. Three females less than 10 years old were likely Eliza Jane, Rachel P., and Sarah B. Patterson.
The 1830 federal census of the Warren Township of Belmont County, Ohio enumerates the household of Jeremiah Patterson, age 30–39 years (983). A female, 30–39 years old, was likely Elizabeth (Plummer) Patterson, and a 15–19 year-old female was likely Rachel P. Patterson. A 10–14 year-old male was likely William L. Patterson, and a 10–14 year-old female was likely Sarah B. Patterson. Also living in the Jeremiah Patterson were an additional female, age 10–14 years; two males, age 5–9 years; and three males, less than 5 years old. Two of the males less than 5 years old may have been Isaac and Silas Patterson; others have not been identified.
On 21 Aug 1837, Jeremiah Patterson acquired 80 acres of land in Athens County, Ohio described as the Northwest quarter of the southwest quarter and the southwest quarter of the northwest quarter of Section 26, Township 8 North, Range 12 West on the Ohio River Survey Meridian in the district of lands subject to sale at Marietta, Ohio (1309). In Apr 1845, this land became part of Morgan County, Ohio.
At the 1 Jun 1840 federal census of the Marion Township, then in Athens County, Ohio, Jeremiah Patterson and his wife Elizabeth were both 40–49 years old (984). William L. Patterson and Sarah B. Patterson were likely enumerated as 20–29 years old. Silas and Isaac Patterson were likely recorded as 10–14 years old. A female 5–9 years old was likely Mary Patterson, and a female less than 5 years old may have been Anne Patterson. Two 15–19 year-old males, a 5–9 year-old male and a female less than 5 years old have not been identified.
The 15 Aug 1850 federal census of the Marion Township of Morgan County, Ohio enumerates the household of Jeremiah Patterson, 59 years old (985). Jeremiah was working as a farmer. Also living in the household were Elizabeth Patterson, 54 years old, Silas Patterson, 22 years old, Isaac Patterson, 20 years old, Mary Patterson, 17 years old, Anne Patterson, 14 years old; and Jane Patterson, 12 years old. With the exception of Jeremiah, all family members were born in Ohio. Two laborers were enumerated with the Jeremiah Patterson household: Dempsey Boswell, 16 years old, and Stewart Thompson, 23 years old. Both laborers were born in Ohio. At the 1850 federal census, Jeremiah Patterson owned real estate valued at $1,200.
Jeremiah Patterson died in Morgan County, Ohio on 28 Oct 1850. Letters of administration of the Estate of Jeremiah Patterson were issued to Elizabeth Patterson and Caleb Patterson on 25 Nov 1850 (981). William Patterson and Wm H. Morrall posted a $1,000 bond.

Caleb Patterson and William Patterson posted a $1,000 bond to assure the administration of the Estate of Jeremiah Patterson (981). Caleb Patterson may have been a son of Jeremiah and Elizabeth Patterson and a brother to William Patterson.
The birthplace of Jeremiah Patterson is not clear in the 1850 federal census of Morgan County, Ohio; however, the abbreviation does not appear to be for North Carolina (985).
Belmont County, Ohio was created on 7 Sep 1801 from from parts of Jefferson and Washington counties.
On 11 Mar 1845, Morgan County, Ohio gained from parts of Athens County.
