At Peter’s birth, Jacob Dennis was about 29 years old. Little is known about Peter’s mother Sarah. By 18 Jul 1799, Peter Dennis was living in Hancock County, Georgia where at age 21, he was  appointed an Ensign in the Third Battalion of the Hancock County Regiment of Georgia Militia (998).

Before Jun 1800, Peter Dennis married Elizabeth Boswell of Hancock County, Georgia. At their marriage, Peter Dennis was 22 years old, and Elizabeth Boswell was 20. Elizabeth Boswell was a daughter of James Boswell and his wife Susannah (Boreland) Boswell. A daughter, Matilda Dennis, was born to Peter and Elizabeth on 22 Feb 1801, and a daughter, Marina Dennis was born on 9 Jul 1802 (831). A son Jacob Dennis was born to Peter and Elizabeth in Hancock County on 13 Apr 1805, and a son John Dennis was born in Hancock County on 22 Jul 1807 (831).

Two males, 10–15 years old, were likely Jacob and John Dennis, and a 10–15 year-old female was likely Jane Dennis. A male and female, both less than 10 years old, were likely William T. Dennis and Amanda C. Dennis. A second female, 10–15 years old, has not been identified; she may have died young.

The 1820 Georgia Tax Digest lists Peter Dennis in Captain John Kinbrick’s Militia District of Putnam County, Georgia for 398 acres of land on Rooty Creek, two town lots in Eatonton estimated to be worth $400, and a two-wheel carriage (1000). Rooty Creek forms the eastern boundary of Putnam County with Hancock County. Dennis; and a 5–9 year old male, likely Peter E. Dennis.

On 26 Jul 1830, Peter Dennis began purchasing land in Talbot County, Georgia, buying Lott 44 containing 202 and 1/2 acres from John B. Gorman (128, Page 395). Presumably, the Peter Dennis family migrated to Talbot County at about that time. Nine additional purchases, with the last on 23 Mar 1837 from William Towns for Lot 43 containing 202 and 1/2 acres (128, Page 396), leaving Peter Dennis with a large plantation of about 2,044 acres.
