Biography notes for Mark Alexander George

Mark Alexander George (11 Nov 1802 - 30 Jul 1891)

Mark Alexander George was born in Jones County, Georgia on 11 Nov 1802, a child of James George and Mary Hunter George (Hardin). He likely was the male age 16-25 years living in the James George household at the 1820 federal census of Jones County, Georgia. Mark George was the second child born to James and Mary George; an older brother, William B. George, was born in about 1795.

On 30 Dec 1824, Mark Alexander George and Jane Boswell Dennis married in Putnam County, Georgia. Mark A. George was 22 years of age. Jane Dennis, age 15 years, was the youngest child of Peter A. Dennis and his wife Elizabeth Dennis (Boswell).

A first child, Mary Dennis George, was born to Mark and Jane George on 5 Oct 1827. Jane George was 18 years of age, and Mark George was age 24 years.

By 1830, the Mark George family was living in Monroe County, Georgia where the 1830 federal census enumerates a Mark George, age 20-29 years. A female, age 15-19 and a female age 0-4 years were living in the household. This census record is consistent with the relative ages of Mark Alexander and Jane George as well as their daughter Mary Dennis George.

Before 1832, the Mark A. George family migrated to Talbot County, Georgia. As a result of his draw in the 1832 Georgia land lottery, Mark A. George of Talbot County, Georgia was granted land described as Number 4, District 23, Section 2, Cherokee. At the time of the lottery, Mark George was a resident of Coxe’s District of Talbot County, Georgia. On 3 Mar 1832, Brother Mark George and Sister Jane George, his wife, were received into the Talbotton Baptist Church congregation by letter. On 16 Jan 1837 and again in Sep 1838, Mark George appeared in court in Captain Johnson’s District of Talbot County.

In about 1832, a second child, John T. George, was born to Mark and Jane George.

On 16 Jan 1837 and again in Sep 1838, Mark George appear in court in Captain Johnson’s District of Talbot County, Georgia.

In 1837, by an act of the Georgia General Assembly, Mark George was appointed as a Trustee at the incorporation of the Talbotton Baptist Church.

Before 1840, three additional children were born to Mark and Jane George: Amanda George in about 1833, James in about 1837, and Jasper in about 1839.

The 1840 federal census of Talbot County, Georgia enumerates the household of Mark A. George, age 30-39 years and a female age 30-39 years, presumably his wife Jane George (Dennis). Also living in the Mark George household were a female, age 10-14; a male, age 5-9 years; a female, age 5-9 years; and two males under 5 years of age. The ages of Mark George and the oldest female are consistent with the known ages of Mark and Jane George in 1840. Presumably, the female, age 10-14, was Mary Dennis George, and the male age 5-9 years was John T. George. Amanda George was the female age 5-9 years, and James and Jasper George were the males under 5 years of age.

On 30 Nov 1840, Mark A. George witnessed a Will in Talbot County. During Sep 1845 and Mar 1847, he served on grand juries in Talbot County, Georgia. On 29 Mar 1947, Mark A. George again witnessed a Will in Talbot County.

The 16 Oct 1850 federal census of the 22nd District of Talbot County, Georgia records the household of Mark A. George, age 41 years and born in Georgia; and his wife, Jane George, age 23 also born in Georgia. Mark George was working as a farmer. Children of Mark and Jane George living in the household were Mary, age 23; John, age 18; Amanda, age 17; James, age 13; Jasper, age 11; Martha, age 8; Pamilla, age 6; and Martin George, age 3 years. All children were born in Georgia. John George was working as a laborer.

Before 21 Apr 1856, Mark A. George migrated from Talbot County, Georgia to neighboring Chattahoochee County, Georgia.

During the period 21 Apr 1856 - 12 Jan 1857, Mark Alexander George served as a Justice of the Inferior Court of Chattahoochee County, Georgia.

The 2 Aug 1860 federal census of Chattahoochee County, Georgia enumerates the M. A. George household. Mark A. George was 57 years of age, born in Georgia, and working as a farmer. His wife Jane George was age 50 years. Also living in the household were Susan George, age 17 years; Permelia George, age 15; and Judson George, age 12 years. All family members were born in Georgia. Mark A. George held real estate valued at $10,000 and a personal $15,430 estate.

In 1864, 1865, and 1866, M. A. George appears on tax lists for Division 6 of Collection District 2 of Georgia.

The 5 Aug 1870 federal census of the Flint Hill District of Talbot County, Georgia records the household of Marcus George, age 67 years and working as a farmer. Jane George was 60 years of age. Children of Mark A. and Jane George living in the household were Amelia George, age 24 years; Judson, age 22; and Martha Gordy (George), age 27 years. Caroline Gordy, age 8 and a daughter of Martha Gordy and her deceased husband Gilbert P. Gordey was also living in the Mark George household. All members of the household were born in Georgia.

According to a city directory, by 1879, Mark A. George was living in Talbotton in Talbot County, Georgia. The 7 Jun 1880 federal census of Talbotton enumerates Mark A. George, age 77 years, and his daughter Amelia George, age 31 years.

Mark Alexander George died on 30 Jul 1891 in Talbot County, Georgia; presumably he is buried in Talbot County.

Notes and Comments

Dates of birth and death for Mark A. George are as stated by Rogers (1976).

In the 1832 Georgia Land Lottery, Mark Alexander George of Talbot County, Georgia drew Number 4 of District 23 in Section. This lot was located in the northeast area of present-day Bartow County, near the intersection of Calico Valley Road with Mt. Pleasant Road. Monroe County, Georgia was created on 15 May 1821 from previously unassigned land, adjacent on its east boundary to part of Jones County.

Biography notes for Mark Alexander George

Mark A. George
A Brief Biography
Norma Kate Rogers

Mr. George, grandfather of Mr. Charlie George, who with his family, lives in Columbus, was a prominent citizen of this county in its early years, while he died in Talbot County where he removed when leaving Chattahoochee and where his wife's father Peter Dennis lived for many years.

Mark Alexander George, born in Jones County Georgia on November 11, 1802, died July 31, 1891, was of Scotch-Irish parentage; his mother was a Miss Hardin. He married Jane B. Dennis in Putnam County, Georgia in 1824 - the same year he joined the Baptist Church - and was remarkable for his devotion to both throughout the remainder of his long life.

Mr. George, while an ardent politician, never sought or accepted political preferment for himself. He was an old line Whig, after the war becoming a Democrat, but as he often said "not from choice." The Whig party being dead, he, like other southern gentlemen, could not affiliate with the radical party and therefore became a Democrat from necessity.

It has been said that Mr. Mark George united as many excellencies with as few failings as are often met with in one character and that "he bore without reproach the grand old name of gentleman."

George was granted land in Monroe County, Georgia in the 1821 4th Land Lottery of Georgia from land ceded by the Creek Nation of Indians. William B. George received Lot 24 in District 4, located within present-day Monroe County. The names Thames and Twiggs are associ aated with this entry. William B. George may have been the brother of Mark A. George by that name, and Mark A. George may have occupied the property at the 1830 census.
