Biography notes for Elias Edmonds
Elias Edmonds was born in Lancaster County, Virginia on 24 Mar 1752/53, a son of William Edmonds and Judith Sydnor.

On 7 May 1759, at the formation of Fauquier County, Elias Edmonds was issued a Commission of the Peace by the Colony of Virginia. Elias Edmonds was commissioned to build the first jail in Fauquier County. The building was to be of wood, 12 feet square in the clear, with a brick or stone chimney, for the sum of seventy-three pounds and fifteen shillings, and was to be completed within three months. The building was accepted 24 Apr 1760.

The Will of Elias Edmonds was proved on 28 Jun 1784, and Elias Edmonds was granted a certificate for obtaining probate.

Elias Edmonds came into Court and undertook to build a prison of the dimensions following to wit, to be twelve feet square in the clear and by the following Bill of Scantling, the Sills to be 12 by 10, plates, corner posts and braces 10 by 6, eight feet pitch, joists, studds and sleepers 6 by 6, to be framed within an Inch of each other, the Rafters and Wind Beams 4 by 3, the cover of Chesnut Shingles 18 inches long to shew 6, to be boarded within and without with white Oak Plank 8 inches wide to be nailed with half crown nails two in every plank and two in evvery stud, the plank to be inch and a half thick rabitted and beeded, the floors to be laid Inch and half plank eight inches wide to be nailed with half crown nails to have two doors, one to have Iron barrs crossed of one inch square, to have lights ten by eight with strong locks, bolts and hinges, the other door of double plank nailed with half crown nails within four inches of each side the door with strong Hinges bolts and staples and fitted to shut close on the Iron Door, the Window to be twenty by eighteen inches with lights of Iron Barrs, one and a half inch square will let in the frame, the lights six by four with a good brick or Stone Chimney two feet and a half in the clear with barrs of Iron of one and an half inch square to go through the Funnel where the Chimney goes through the House within four inches of each other well let into the frame of the House to be raised on underpinning of Brick or good Stone two feet thick, one foot from the ground filled up to the top of the sleeper with clay and stone well rammed; the whole to be completed within three months in a good workmanlike manner for which he is to have Seventy three pounds, fifteen shillings, which is to be levied by the County at the laying of the Levy. And it is ordered that the Clerk of this Court do take Bond with sufficient Security of the said Edmonds for the performance of the said Work.

Named: Wife Elizabeth - to Possess and Enjoy the one moiety of my Estate both Real and Personal During her natural life and after her Decease to Decend to my beloved Son Elias Edmonds.

Son Elias - the other moiety Residue and Remainder of my Estate.

Daughters - Ann Hubbard, Judith Bucknor and Elizabeth Bruin - shall enjoy and Possess all that part of my moveable Estate of every kind whatsoer that they and Each of them my now have in their Possession they and Each of their Heirs forever, Provided that there be no Claim nor Title set up under the will of Simon Miller Deceased, and should it happen, they or Either of them or their Heirs Claim any Benefit under the above mentioned will that then they or Either of them or their Heirs Claiming such Benefit, Shall be Excluded the Benefit of whatever part of my Estate they may now have in their Possession, And the same to Decend to my Son Elias Edmonds ... should my beloved Son Elias Edmonds Dye without Lawfull Issue that then my Estate both Real and personal may be Sold and equally divided amongst my three Daughters.
