Joseph Riggan ca (1700 – 1769)

Joseph Riggan was born before Jul 1703, likely in Surry County, Virginia. He was likely a son of Francis Regan and his wife Jane Gross (1253). Francis Regan was born in Cork County, Ireland in 1662 and immigrated with his parents to Surry County, Virginia before 6 Oct 1687 (1254).

Joseph Riggan and Mary Pegram married in Surry County, Virginia (595). Mary was a daughter of Daniel and Frances Pegram.

On 9 Jul 1724, a patent was issued to Joseph Regan for a 100 acre land grant in Isle of Wight County, Virginia on “the south side of the main Blackwater swamp. Beginning at a corner twixt Mr. William Edwards and Richard Atkinson” (1074). Before 8 Oct 1747, Joseph Riggin sold this 100 acre tract to Benjamin Barrum (1296).

In Surry County, Virginia, on 24 Oct 1748, John Riggan, Sr., William George, John Riggan, Jr., and Joseph Riggan witnessed a deed by Samuel Thompson and Sarah his wife to John Thompson, both of Surry County, Virginia, for 25 acres, part of 150 acres which Samuel Thompson purchased from Joseph King and Katherine, his wife, on east side of Cypress Swamp (1295, Deed Book 5, Page 317).

Presumably, Jospeh Riggan owned land in Bute County, North Carolina before 13 Feb 1768 when the Bute County, North Carolina Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions “ordered that the hands of Joseph Riggan, Thomas Reed, Jesse Riggan, William Durham be added to the road under Joseph Shearing, overseer” (1209, Page 14).

In early 1769, Joseph Riggan began to convey land in Bute County, North Carolina. On 25 Feb 1769, Joseph Riggan and and his wife, Mary Riggan, of Bute County, North Carolina made a deed to William Riggan of Surry County, Virginia for 100 acres of land in Bute County on Little Creek (1208). William Riggan paid £10 Virginia money. William Durham, John Riggan, and Samuel Durham witnessed the deed. John Riggan proved the deed in Bute County, North Carolina Court in Nov 1769, and the deed was registered on 25 Jan 1770. Joseph Riggan was more than 64 years old when he conveyed land to William Riggan of Surry County, Virginia.

On 24 Mar 1769, Joseph Riggan, John Osborn, and John Hudson witnessed a deed by Chamberlain Hudson to Thomas House for 800 acres of land in Bute County, North Carolina on head of Meltons Creek beginning at a branch of Gunters Creek (1081). The deed was recorded in Bute County Court in Nov 1769.

On 12 Aug 1769, a deed by Joseph Riggan and his wife to William Durham was proved by the oath of John Riggan, a witness and on motion the same was ordered registered (1209, Page 59). Also on 12 Aug 1769, a deed by Joseph Riggin to William Riggin was proved on oath of John Riggin a witness and ordered registered (1209, Page 59).

On 29 Sep 1769, Joseph Riggan and Mary, his wife made a deed for 100 acres of land in Parish of Saint Johns of Bute County, North Carolina to William Durham, Sr. for £30 Virginia money (1076). Joseph Raggan and William Durham, Sr. were of Saint Johns Parish of Bute County, North Carolina. The land was on the east side of Little Hobb Quarter adjacent to parcels held by William Walker, William Durham, and William Raggan. John Raggan, Samuel Durham, and Relah Mangram witnessed the deed. The deed was registered in Bute County Court in Nov 1769.

Presumably, Joseph Riggan died in Bute County, North Carolina not long after 29 Sep 1769.
