Dempsey Battle (ca 1758 - 1857)
Dempsey Battle was born in about 1758 in Edgecombe County, North Carolina, a son of Elisha Battle and Elizabeth Ruth Battle (Sumner). He married Jane Andrews, and a son Cullen Battle was born in Edgecombe County, North Carolina on 11 Mar 1785.
On 9 Oct 1784, Silas Mercer and his wife Dorcas Mercer of Halifax County, North Carolina deeded 750 acres on a branch of Shoulderbone Creek, the original grant Jul 1784 to Silas Mercer. J. Walker, P. Smith, and Sanders Walker witnessed the deed. (Source: Wilkes County, Georgia Deed Book, 1784-1785).
At the 1790 Federal Census of Edgecombe County, North Carolina, the Dempsey Battle family inhabited a dwelling adjacent to that of Elisha Battle, the father of Dempsey Battle.

Edge. Co. Db 24, page 145, deed date 4 Sep 1820, recorded May Ct 1846,
NC grant #2058 to John A. Ward, a tract containing 26 acres on the
south side of Tar River and on both sides of (Buck Run) beginning at a
red oak in (Prices) old line then west 50 poles across said run to a
post oak Jacob Battle's corner then south 87 poles along his line to a
gum and maple on the (Rock Stone Branch) Dempsey Battle's corner then
east 50 poles along his line to a water oak Ward's corner then north to
the first station, entered 29 Oct 1819, signed ( Branch), wit Wm
Hill, Secy. Abstracted 8-04-05, NCA film C.037.40018, CTC. NOTE:
