Nancy Bell Morton (ca Sep 1786 – 12 Jan 1857)
Nancy Bell Morton was born before 27 Sep 1786 in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania (539). She was a daughter of John Morton and his wife Mary.
The 1790 federal census of Westmoreland County enumerates the household of John Morton who was more than 15 years old (664). Also living in the household were a male less than 16 years old and two females, presumably John’s wife Mary and their daughter Nancy Bell Morton. John Morton appears on the 1798 U.S. Direct Tax List for the Washington Township of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania (672). The 1800 Pennsylvania Septennial Census lists John Morton as residing in Derry Township of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania (665).
In 1806, Nancy Bell Morton and Henry Livingston married in Indiana County, Pennsylvania (369). At their marriage, Henry Livingston was 30 years old, and Nancy Morton was age 23 years. A daughter, Margaret Livingston, was born to Henry and Nancy Livingston on 7 Jun 1807 (341, 803). A son who has not been identified was also born prior to 1810. The 1810 federal census of the Blacklick Township of Indiana County, Pennsylvania enumerates the household of Henry Livingston age 28–44 years, a female, age 28–44, who was almost certainly Nancy Bell (
Morton) Livingston, a male and a female, presumably Margaret Livingston, both less than 10 years old (543).
On 11 May 1814, a daughter Sarah Jane Livingston was born to Henry and Nancy Livingston, and a son Henry Livingston, Jr. was born on 10 Apr 1816, both in the Black Lick Township of Indiana County, Pennsylvania.
The 27 Sep 1850 federal census of the Black Lick Township of Indiana County, Pennsylvania enumerates the household of Henry Livingston, 74 years old (539). His wife, Nancy Livingston was 64 years old, and a son David Livingston was age 20 years. Henry Livingston worked as a wagon maker, and David Livingston worked as a laborer. All members of the household were born in Pennsylvania. Henry Livingston held real estate valued at $150.
Nancy Bell (
Morton) Livingston has not been identified in the 1860 U.S. federal census of Pennsylvania. Presumably she died between 27 Sep 1850 and the 1860 census.
Notes and Comments
At the 24 Sep 1850 census of the Blacklick Township in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, Nancy (
Morton) Livingston was 64 years old (539), implying that she was born in before 24 Sep 1786.
John Morton appeared on Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania tax lists for 1783, 1786, and 1787 (670, 671, 673), and presumably his wife and family were living with him when each of these tax lists were made. Tax lists for 1786 and 1787 assign John Morton to the North Huntingdon Township of Westmoreland County (671, 673).
The certificate of the death of William B. Livingston made in Ellsworth County, Kansas states that his parents were Henry Livingston, born in Ireland, and Nancy Morton, born in Pennsylvania (369).
The federal census of the Black Lick Township of Indiana County, Pennsylvania on 27 Sep 1850 records Nancy, presumably the wife of Henry Livingston, as 64 years old. This record implies that Nancy Bell Morton was born 28 Sep 1785 – 27 Sep 1786.
The date and place of Nancy Bell (
Morton) Livingston’s death is sometimes stated as 12 Jan 1857 and Chestnut Ridge in Fayette County, Pennsylvania. Although this date of death is consistent with her apparent absence in the 1860 federal census, a reliable source for this information has not been identified.
Indiana County, Pennsylvania was created on 30 Mar 1803 from parts of Lycoming County and Westmoreland County. The boundaries of Indiana County remained unchanged until 29 Apr 1855.
