William Ragan Stone
William Ragan Stone was educated at Frankfurt, Kentucky Military Academy.
In May 1861, William R. Stone joined the Jeff Davis Guards at Vicksburg and was elected 3rd Lieutenant. On 26 May 1861, he departed Brokenburn to join his company. Both William R. Stone and Wylie Bohannon (Uncle Bo) were at Richmond, Virginia by 16 Jun 1861, when Kate Stone received a letters from each.
On 13 Aug 1861, William R. Stone was at Manassas, Virginia.
Wounded during the Battle of Fredericksburg, William R. Stone returned to Brokenburn on 1 Jan 1863. He departed for Virginia on 4 Mar 1863.
Wounded in the left ar above the elbow in the battle at Chancellorsville.
On 20 Sep 1863, Kate Stone wrote that John Ragan (Uncle Johnny) brought word that William R. Stone “was neither killed nor hurt in the Pennsylvania campaign.”
Notes and Comments
In her journal, Sarah Katharine (Kate) Stone refers to William Ragan Stone as “My Brother.”
On 29 May 1861, Sarah K. Stone wrote in her journal that her brother William Ragan Stone was 15 months older than her.
Mr. Valentine attended school with William Ragan Stone, presumably at the Frankfurt, Kentucky Military Academy
William Ragan Stone likely fought in the 1st Battle of Manassas.
Apparently, William Ragan Stone died before the 1880 federal census. The 1880 federal census of Madison Parish, Louisiana enumerates Mrs. F. Stone, age 37 years and a widow, with a son Barnet Stone, age 6 years.
