Marriage of Peter B. Bruin’s Daughter to Dr. Cummins
In a letter of 12 Mar 1804, Thomas Rodney wrote to his son Caesar A. Rodney that "I was absent when the last mail went off having gone up to the Bayou Pierre to marry a daughter of Judge Bruin's to a Doctor Cummins, for the Judges Stand Priests sometimes here in Cases of Matrimony and the Justices of the Peace also have authority to marry the better Sort prefer having it done by the Superior Judges and on this Occasion I went 60 miles to oblige Judge Bruin and returned the 4th day again as I could not be absent more than three days from the Board."
