Jonathan Ragan, Jr. was born before 1775, likely in Virginia. He was a son of Jonathan Ragan and his wife Anne. Jonathan Ragan, Sr. migrated from Amelia County, Virginia to Georgia after 1776 where he served in the Georgia Line under General Elijah Clark during the American Revolution. For his service, Jonathan Ragan, Sr. was granted land in Wilkes County, Georgia, and the family presumably was living there by 1783.
