He was a Deacon of the Brushy Creek Baptist Church, a Justice of the Peace, and a Tax Collector. William Johnson

Elijah Johnson of Talbot County, Georgia paid tax on land in Burke County, Georgia held by the estate of William Johnson. William Johnson may have been the father or brother of Elijah Johnson. A William Johnson served as a Lieutenant in the Continental Line of the Georgia Brigade during the American Revolution.

Elijah Johnson of Washington County, Georgia

The 1820 Federal Census enumerates Elijah Johnson households in both Burke and Washington Counties. Both records show the oldest male as age 26-45 years. In 1820, Elijah Johnson, the father of Amazon Jane Johnson, was 41 years of age. The oldest female in the Washington County record is 16-25 years, too young to have been the mother of Amazon Jane Johnson. Additionally, the Washington County record does not enumerate males with ages corresponding to Moses W. Johnson or to William L. Johnson.

The 1840 Federal Census of Washington County enumerates a Elijah Johnson that appears to be the same household as was enumerated by the 1830 census. Elijah Johnson, the father of Amazon Jane Johnson, died in 1838.

Thus, the Washington County census records apparently do not correspond to the father of Amazon Jane Johnson, and land and tax records for Washington County apparently are not relevant.

Probate Notes

On 21 Jan 1856, the Court of Ordinary of Talbot County, Georgia appointed William David Emanuel as administrator of the estate of Elijah Johnson. Elijah Johnson, the father of Amazon Jane Emanuel (Johnson) died on 10 Apr 1838 without making a Will. Amazon Jane Emanuel (Johnson) inherited land in Talbot County, Georgia and likely other property as well from her father. Benjamin Thomas Emanuel, the husband of Amazon Jane Emanuel died on 27 Feb 1854. Probate of the Estate of Elijah Johnson may have been involved in settlement of the Estate of Benjamin T. Emanuel.
